Majestic Mantels

Finishing Instructions

Majestic Mantel Shelves are available in MDF, Poplar, Oak, and Embossed/Carved. MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) is made from wood fibers and is a great low cost alternative to wood. Its hard surface resists dents and scratches and its low cost will save you money on your painted applications. Majestic poplar mantels are made of solid clear poplar that can either be painted or stained. Oak mantels are made of clear red oak and ideal for staining. Embossed/Carved mantels are made from clear poplar. Please view the different woods with the different finish options listed.

Painting

Step 1- Choose the color of paint you wish to use.
Step 2- It's a good idea to test your paint color on the backside, prior to starting.
Step 3- Install the mantel.
Step 4- Fill all nail holes with putty or painters caulk.
Step 5- Prime the mantel before you paint (Kilz is recommended). Use either latex or oil base paint.
Step 6- Paint the mantel.
Step 7- If necessary, paint the mantel or shelf a second time.

Staining

Step 1- Choose the stain finish you wish to use (Minwax is recommended).
Step 2- It is recommended that you brush a small portion of the back with the stain finish and let it dry to make sure you are happy with the color. If you will be using a polyurethane finish after the stain is applied, please apply the polyurethane and let it dry to make sure you are happy with the outcome before you start on the finished side of the mantel.
Step 3- Install the mantel.
Step 4- Stain the mantel and let dry.
Step 5- Fill all nail holes with putty to match the stain.
Step 6- Brush polyurethane on the mantel and let dry.
Step 7- Brush polyurethane on a second time if you feel necessary.

Faux Finishing

It is highly recommended that when faux finishing, marbleizing, or any other exotic finishing is to be done that you consult with a professional finisher. They can literally make all the difference on a custom project. Many of these highly skilled professionals are artisans and can really add the "wow" factor to your home.
